Building, Industrial and Civil Structures

J&G have been appointed as structural engineers on buildings ranging from individual low-cost units to upmarket residential properties. Several multistorey apartment blocks are part of J&G’s portfolio.

J&G have completed many structural steel warehouses and factories. These range from simple portal frame units to +14 000m² industrial plants with large roof spans housing overhead crane gantries.

Commercial buildings are designed to maximise flexibility for tenant use. This is achieved by adopting a philosophy of open space planning wherever possible. J&G have been involved with mixed-use multistorey developments where residential, office, retail and parking facilities have all been accommodated within the same building footprint.

J&G have been appointed as structural engineers on several shopping centre projects and a multitude of fuel service station installations throughout South Africa. Lightweight structural steel roofs are common in these structures.

J&G have undertaken many public building projects such as magistrate's courts, schools, public facilities and military installations for local municipalities and the Department of Public Works.

Eskom have appointed J&G as structural engineers at their nuclear power station in the Western Cape for the upgrading of several of the facilities at the plant.

J&G have been appointed as structural engineers for the stabilisation of marine quays and for the design of protection coatings to resist concrete deterioration. Interaction with J&G’s geotechnical engineers and underwater marine surveyors has enabled J&G to determine appropriate techniques for stabilisation and fill containment. Design of appropriate fendering for ship berthing is incorporated where required.

J&G have expertise in the design of concrete and structural steel elements for the mining industry. A wide range of plant installations, including conveyor systems, have been designed.

J&G’s building division works closely with other disciplines within the group in offering the structural design of such facilities as:

• Transfer stations
• Rail structures
• Road culverts, retaining walls and bridges.

J&G have been involved with the restoration and stabilisation of buildings over 200 years old that are showing signs of decay through low maintenance. Underpinning techniques, wall-tie methods and appropriate selection of repair materials are critical to these projects.

J&G are often appointed as expert structural witnesses where buildings show damage through corrosion, settlement, fire or through the inappropriate choice of building materials, methods and designs. Structural reports are prepared to assist with insurance claims or legal settlements.
