First Integrated Waste Management Facility - ReSource , February 2009

The City of Cape Town is developing the first integrated waste management facility in South Africa.

The facility will comprise a refuse transfer station, a compaction hall, container-handling operations, garden refuse-chipping facilities, materials-recovery facility, workshop, wash bay, diesel storage, domestic recycling centre and a public drop-off, security building, entrance building and weighbridges with provision for a future ‘resource park’ and accommodation for future alternative technologies.

Kzn Pedestrian Bridge – A First In Africa - Civil Engineering , November/December 20

The Mkomaas River Pedestrian Bridge is the only prestressed concrete ribbon bridge in Africa.  Its main span of 150m equals the world record for this type of bridge.  The bridge was constructed from concrete elements suspended from cables tensioned between abutments, which were then stressed along the length of the bridge by tensioning a second set of cables placed in ducts through the elements.  Compression stresses induced in this way compensate for tensile stresses resulting from live loads on the structure.  The project earned a commendation in the category Technical

KZN’s most successful borehole? , 2004/12/12

Parts of the Zululand District Municipality (ZDM) have been experiencing severe water shortages. This shortage has especially been felt in the town of Nongoma where the local Vuna dam has silted up and water supply has been fraught with problems.
