Goedgevonden Coal Mine is up and running - Mining Weekly , June 26

The Goedgevonden project has seen the development of a major new Greenfield, opencut thermal coal mine.  The project is expected to produce an estimated 3,1-million tons of export thermal coal yearly and about 3,6-million tons yearly for domestic use.  The project includes the development of a coal-handling and processing plant, incorporating a crushing system, a coal processing plant, a water recovery system, a waste disposal system, two product stackers and a reclamation tunnel system, and a rail load-out facility.

Construction of Dikgatlhong Dam - Construction Review , May 2009

Construction of the largest dam in Botswana, the Dikgatlhong Dam in north-east Botswana, commenced in March 2008 and is currently progressing well.  The dam is on the Lower Shashe River just downstream of the Shashe/Tati confluence approximately 55 km north-east of Selebi Phikwe, and approximately 5 km upstream of the border between Botswana and Zimbabwe.  It is approximately 60 km downstream of the existing Shashe Dam which is situated closer to Francistown on the Shashe River.

First Integrated Waste Management Facility - ReSource , February 2009

The facility will comprise a refuse transfer station, a compaction hall, container-handling operations, garden refuse-chipping facilities, materials-recovery facility, workshop, wash bay, diesel storage, domestic recycling centre and a public drop-off, security building, entrance building and weighbridges with provision for a future ‘resource park’ and accommodation for future alternative technologies.

Kzn Pedestrian Bridge – A First In Africa - Civil Engineering , November/December 20

The Mkomaas River Pedestrian Bridge is the only prestressed concrete ribbon bridge in Africa.  Its main span of 150m equals the world record for this type of bridge.  The bridge was constructed from concrete elements suspended from cables tensioned between abutments, which were then stressed along the length of the bridge by tensioning a second set of cables placed in ducts through the elements.  Compression stresses induced in this way compensate for tensile stresses resulting from live loads on the structure.  The project earned a commendation in the category Technical
