Nacala Dam, Mozambique - Water Sewage and Effluent bulletin , 08 June 2009

The rehabilitation on the Nacala Dam in Mozambique will be undertaken to augment capacity from 14-million m3 to 21-million m3. The dam is the main supply of water to Nampula province.

A US$2,7-million contract was signed between Jeffares & Green and the Millennium Challenge Account Mozambique. At this time, the dam supplies only 20% but will supply around 70% of the population in the Nacala area after expansion.

The Nacala Dam is in a state of disrepair and the reduction of the water level since 2005 has forced reliance on cisterns.

The two main subcontractors are Lamont in Zimbabwe and Conseng in Mozambique. The hydrology, geotechnical engineering and environmental services will be undertaken by Terratest.

The feasibility study will start in June 2009 and construction is expected to commence towards the end of 2010. Work on the dam is expected to cost US$11,7-million. Expanding the Nacala water-supply system will cost another US$10-million and reconstruction of the wastewater-collection system will cost another US$17,2-million.
