Budding engineers go on site - Maritzburg SUN , 2008/08/22

Pupils with above average skills in maths and science were recently shown over the Mgeni viaduct project in KwaMashu by a Pietermaritzburg firm of consulting engineers.
The South African Association of Consulting Engineers (SAACE) recently encouraged all engineering firms to get involved, in Job Shadow Day, held last \week, to expose pupils to the consulting engineering experience.
Jeffares and Green (J&G), based in Cascades in Pietermaritzburg answered this call by taking a group of excited Grade 11 pupils, from various schools in Maritzburg, to the site of the Mgeni viaduct at KwaMashu, near Durban. J&G are a major sponsor of PROTEC, a three year supplementary programme for pupils who show above average skills in maths and science. Pupils participate in Saturday school, vacation school activities, work experience, site visits, and life skills training. The objective is to help pupils obtain the best matric results possible, assist them to discern their career paths, and equip them for tertiary education, hoping that some will become civil engineers.
