Honour for great builders - The Star , 2007/07/03
Two innovative South African pedestrian bridges are among the impressive projects and concepts that have won 2007 Fulton Awards for excellence in the use of concrete. The Fulton Award for Concrete Design was won by the 150m-long Mkomaas River pedestrian bridge in the Sisonke district of rural KwaZulu-Natal where it now unites two communities. The length of the prestressed ribbon bridge is on par with the longest of this kind in the world in Bulgaria. The award for Aesthetic Appeal went to the Bosmansdam pedestrian bridge in Cape Town which the judges felt admirably showed off the versatility of concrete. Both bridges were designed by consulting engineers, Jeffares & Green. Winners of the other Fulton categories were Impala Platinum Shaft No 16 (Civil Engineering), Athlone Soccer Stadium (Building Project), Durban Harbour services tunnel (Construction Techniques), and Spoornet-Infrabolt concrete sleeper project (Special Category). The Fulton Awards are presented every two years by the Concrete Society of Southern Africa. This year’s awards were made on June 9 at a gala banquet at the Champagne Sports resort in the Drakensberg. The Cement and Concrete Institute is the anchor sponsor of the awards.
